Hiccup and Astrid In ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2

There’s just under one year until the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless continue in How To Train Your Dragon 2. Set for release June 20, 2014, star Jay Baruchel seems incredibly confident in the film saying, “It’s going to be pretty incredible in every way.”

Our first glimpse at what exactly that could mean has been revealed. A new licensing magazine has a ton of images of the new character designs from the sequel as well as some a new plot description.

The info came from License Global Magazine, via Bleeding Cool. First up, here’s a plot description that’s slightly different from one that had been making the rounds.

The thrilling second chapter of the epic How To Train Your Dragon trilogy brings back the fantastical world of Hiccup and Toothless five years later.  While Astrid, Snoutlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island’s new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds.  When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace.

‘Man of Steel,’ ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ & More in 2015

With some of the highest rated comedy series on cable – including It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League – and acclaimed dramas Justified and Sons of Anarchy also on its schedule, FX has successfully drawn in a sizable and very diverse audience over the past few years. However, as the network prepares to launch its sister channel FXX later this year, it remains determined to attract new young viewers.

By moving It’s Always Sunny and The League over to FXX, FX will have a lot of airtime to fill. But one thing the channel won’t be lacking is blockbuster films, as it’s landed the TV broadcast premiere rights to many of this summer’s biggest hits.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, FX acquired Man of Steel, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Purge, This Is the End, Fast & Furious 6, The Internship and Epic earlier this week. The additions – impressive in their own right – now join a stacked FX roster of 17 hit 2013 feature films, including Iron Man 3, Oblivion, Evil Dead and Identity Thief. The films will be officially entered into FX’s library sometime in 2015 and will premiere on the channel after that.

With 71% of this year’s highest-grossing movies heading into its vault, FX is primed and ready to out-duel its cable competitors – at least when it comes to major film content – for the next few years. When you factor in the network’s quality series and varied programming, its lineup will surely be tough to beat.

Each and every one of the films FX has acquired has banked a sizable profit at the box office this year, but the biggest get of this new batch for the network is undoubtedly Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, Man of Steel.

Though critical reaction was mixed, general audiences came out in droves last weekend to see Henry Cavill don the red cape, propelling the film’s gross domestic haul to nearly $170 million after its first week in theaters. And considering the film has a strong approval rating from most who have seen it, it should play well as a repeat view on TV and as a new thrill for those who missed seeing it on the big screen.

We knew this year’s summer blockbusters would find their way onto the silver screen at some point, but we certainly didn’t expect FX to come out and snatch up nearly all of their TV broadcast premiere rights. As a distributor of fine television programs, we already held FX in high regard, but with some big movies coming on the horizon, the channel may become a one stop shop for TV and film lovers.

_____

We’ll see what else the network has in store for us this year when it launches its sister channel FXX on September 2nd, 2013.

THE BUZZ: Ever wondered if Gore Verbinski's Wild West filmmaking style is a little more calculated than the stories of his project's astronomical budgets and out-of-control production spending would have you believe? Not that we mind one bit, especially when Johnny Depp is involved; we're more certain we'll be entertained by this duo than Depp's formerly unbeatable union with Tim Burton. Star Trek into Darkness Rumours

Watch Star Trek into Darkness Online Free ( Star Trek 2 ) (2013) or Download Star Trek into Darkness Movie Now : J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness features about as stark a qualitative difference between plot mechanics and character work as any blockbuster in recent memory.

Judged by the former, this sequel is an absolute mess, one that not only fails to reward any deeper consideration of narrative mechanics both large and small, but actively disincentives any thoughtful discussion of how the story is put together. Pull at one string, and the whole thing starts to fall apart in extremely frustrating ways. ( Watch Star Trek into Darkness Online ) Yet on the character side of things, the case is the exact opposite. Abrams and writers Robert Orci,

Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof (whose mission in life appears to be crafting outstanding, emotional characters and character arcs in the midst of structurally questionable plotting) not only understand Captain Kirk and much of the crew of the USS Enterprise as well or better than most Star Trek creators, but are consistently capable of taking these figures in new, exciting, and creatively invigorating directions that stem organically from the audience’s collective knowledge of series history and iconography.

As a character piece, Star Trek Into Darkness is not flawless, but it is largely fantastic, and remarkably satisfying for longtime fans of the franchise.

Robert Downey Jr. Signs With Marvel For The Avengers 2 & 3

Just weeks before Comic-Con 2013, and just weeks after Iron Man 3 solidified its position among the top five grossing films of all-time, Disney and Marvel Studios are planning even further ahead than ever before. Last week Disney claimed two more release date slots for unannounced Marvel films coming in 2016 and 2017 and today they’ve officially announced that Robert Downey Jr. will continue to have a key role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel is happy to announce that – after reports of tough negotiations – Robert Downey Jr. has officially signed to return as Tony Stark aka Iron Man in both (still untitled) The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3.

Iron Man 4 – at least at this point in time – is not part of the plan for RDJ as he aims to clear up his schedule to pursue other projects. Although Shane Black teased the idea of Iron Man 4 & 5 with Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow’s mixed responses about more installments held true and Marvel aims to focus on expanding the MCU and introducing more characters from the Marvel Comics library, beginning next year with Guardians of the Galaxy.

Despite Marvel holding the (for negotiation purposes) position that they’d be willing to recast Tony Stark, the “I Am Iron Man” quote from the film series couldn’t be truer. Robert Downey Jr. is the poster boy for Marvel Studios’ success and replacing him would be as challenging as it would be disappointing so it was inevitable he’d return in some capacity. Joss Whedon’s praise of the actor and his admittance of having every intention of working with him again for The Avengers 2 – which begins shooting early next year – played out just as we expected and the world can breathe a sigh of relief that he’ll suit up once again when Earth’s Mightiest are forced to join forces in summer 2015.

As for the idea of cameos or guest appearances in other Phase Two and Phase Three films, don’t count on it. From the get-go, Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige made it clear that the next set of films are more standalone, and unlike in Phase One where it was important to emphasize the shared continuity and build towards the main event in The Avengers, it’s no longer necessary with the brand earning its place in pop culture.

Iron Man 3 stood entirely as its own, and while Thor: The Dark World takes place partly on Earth it may follow a similar isolated story pattern while rumor has it Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the story that will bridge The Avengers 1 & 2. After that, Marvel ventures into unexplored territory with its “twisted” space-faring adventure in Guardians of the Galaxy which is not only a standalone story as well, but features an entirely new roster of heroes and villains, leading up to The Avengers 2 and then another new character’s origin story in Ant-Man.

With the Iron Man solo series on break for the forseeable future, the timing makes sense that with Phase Three of the MCU, Ant-Man steps into take over the first chapter duties.

Now to get Don Cheadle back as Rhodey. Should he (War Machine) get a part in The Avengers sequels?

More on this story (and Ant-Man) as it develops.

_____

Iron Man 3 is currently in theaters, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014, The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016 and May 5 2017.

THE BUZZ: Given the subject matter, it's cool and creepy that President Jamie Foxx and First Lady Garcelle Beauvais reflect the current administration, and the advantage this project has over its sound-alike predecessor, Olympus Has Fallen, is the every-gender appeal of its star, Channing Tatum. If anything, 2013 might be remembered as the year that both Roland Emmerich and his equally-VFX-addicted contemporary, Michael Bay, offered up scaled-down project.
